What is a chemical tank?

Chemical tanks are designed to contain base chemicals, partially processed chemicals and finished products in industrial and manufacturing environments. Depending on their design, tanks can be used for static storage, mixing or transport.

How are chemical tanks made?

Melbourne Rotomould moulds chemical tanks in one piece, using a plastic moulding method called rotational moulding. A variety of chemical resistant materials are used, with controlled wall thicknesses to suit the demands of your application. We are expert at combining the best features of multiple materials to achieve specific results. For example, a multiple skin construction may be employed - the inner skin with direct chemical exposure would be of a high grade natural polyethylene, the outer skin a pigmented and UV protected plastic to prevent light transmission, and optionally a bonded foam core insulation between the two skins for strength and thermal insulation.

Why should I use a chemical tank?

A chemical tank is specifically designed to safely contain your chemical. There are a number of aspects that must be addressed. Firstly, to maximise chemical shelf life, your tank must provide optimum storage conditions which includes protection from environmental influences such as light and temperature fluctuation. Next, the outside environment needs protection from the chemical - the vessel must safely isolate and contain it. You should additionally consider bunding your tank and major fittings. Finally, the vessel and fittings must be made of a material that is resistant to the chemical to ensure long service life.

Do I need to bund my tank?

We highly recommend bunding all chemical tanks, and in practice this requirement is often specified. We can design appropriate bunding, and can even build this mechanism into your design.

Rotolined tank options

Chemical tanks can also be rotationally lined. Rotolining metal vessels with polyethylene plastic gives you increased options including higher temperature applications, more aggressive chemicals, and increased wind and earthquake loadings.
